Wine of the Week

Featured Wine of the Week:
A. Mendes 2007 “Muros Antigos” Loureiro, $16.99
Vinho Verde is the great white wine region of Portugal. More well known for their Alvarinho, this Loureiro proves there is more than one quality varietal in production. As is typical of this varietal, it is crisp, aromatic and refreshing. It manages to be at once crisp and fruity, a feat not always easily managed. It is a lovely wine, with a lingering, flavorful finish and a surprisingly rich texture.

Wine of the Month

Terralsole Rosso di Montalcino 2004 Sangiovese Grosso, or Brunello, is one of the most prized varietals Italy has to offer the wine world. Each year, millions of wine enthusiasts patiently anticipate the arrival of the Brunello di Montalcino’s, which traditionally age in barrel for three long years. However, while the Brunello’s continue to evolve in their active solace, Rosso di Montalcino, comprised from the identical grapes, remains available on a regularly affordable basis. “Baby Brunello’s,” as they are commonly known, offer similar characteristics in a vibrant, youthful state. Terralsole is one of the few producers in the Brunello district to be added and praised in the last decade. The proprietors’ worldly knowledge and appreciation of tradition in the region have led their wines to receive tremendous universal accolades. The 2004 Rosso di Montalcino is one such wine.

As the wine sits in glass, an inviting ruby colored treat opens up with floral aromatic notes mingling with sweet earth, cocoa, and nuances of roast coffee. The palate proves to be no less pleasing. The savory characteristics so prevalent on the nose lead way to flavors of cinnamon, dried cherry and creamy chocolate, making this wine an exemplar of harmonious balance between earth and fruit.

Additionally, Italian wines are known for their food pairing capacity, and the Terralsole 2004 Rosso di Montalcino is prototypical in this respect. This “Baby Brunello” will taste beautiful accompanying everything from Lasagne Bolognese to Easter dinner.

Exclusively available at Jonathan’s of La Jolla and Harvest Ranch Markets for $25.99
