We had a request for Spanish wines so this Friday that will be our theme of the evening. This is our red wine lovers tasting since it will include just one white wine followed by four red wines. The reds include wines all ranked 90 or higher in the wine advocate. The evening culminates with the perennially highly acclaimed “Clio” from Jumilla Spain. As usual it is a high octane blend of Cabernet and Monastrell. Although this vintage has yet to be rated, Clio has a history of mid ninety point rankings from Robert Parker.

On Saturday we will taste wines of California. The lineup includes one Chardonnay from Solitude (it is that creamy rich style many of you enjoy) and one Sauvignon Blanc from Tamber Bey Winery. We also enjoy three “big” California red wines. When someone says “big red wine,” what do you think of? I tend to think of a flavorful, full-bodied, rich wine with good concentration and balance. Big red wines also tend to be a bit heady (alcoholic), even tannic, but balance is key. Cabernet is the varietal that comes to mind first, but other varietal, even a Pinot Noir, can be full-bodied. Other grape varieties known for making big red wines include Zinfandel, Nebbiolo, and Petit Syrah and Syrah.

I hope to see you all this weekend.

Friday’s Selections: $20.00 per person

Featuring the Wines of Spain

2009 Bodegas Fernando Ramirez Erre Punto ($29.99)

The 2009 Erre Punto contains 70% old-vine Viura and 30% old-vine Malvasia. It is slightly more expressive with a bit more depth, concentration, and complexity.
Bodegas Fernando Remirez de Genuza ranks among the top half-dozen producers in Rioja. Fernando Remirez de Ganuza has been able to accomplish this by melding the best aspects of traditional and contemporary Rioja styles into his own unique expression. White wine is a new addition to the portfolio.” Jay Miller Wine Advocate – 92 Points!

2005 Algueira Riberia Sacra ($29.99)

Medium to dark ruby-colored, it offers Pinot Noir-like aromatics with pleanty of spicy red fruits and a touch of oak. This leads to an elegant wine with incipient complexity, a silky texture sweet red berry flavors, and good length. The wine can be enjoyed now and over the next 6 years (02/08) Robert Parker Wine Advocate 90 Points!

2005 Martinet Bru Priorat ($39.99)

“The 2005 Martinet Bru is purple-colored with an excellent nose of cedar, smoke, mineral, black cherry, and black currant. Structured, with enough tannin for 5-7 years of further evolution, this intense, lengthy wine will require considerable patience. The 2005 will drink best from 2008 -2015.” Jay Miller Wine Advocate 91+ Points

2006 Sierra Cantabria Collecion Privada ($39.99)

“The 2006 Collecion Privada was sourced from some of the estate’s oldest Tempranillo vines. Malolactic fermentation was in barrel and the wine was aged for 18 months in new French and American oak. It gives up an alluring bouquet of pain grille, liquid mineral, lavender, incense, and blackberry. On the palate it is layered, medium to full-bodied, ripe, and complex. Give this lengthy effort 3-4 years of additional cellaring and drink it from 2013 to 2026.” Jay Miller Wine Advocate 92 Points!

2011 Clio Cuvee ($49.99)

One of the most desired wines in the world perennially is Bodegas El Nido’s Clio. For eight straight years this gorgeous, fruit-driven wine has averaged 95 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. With the 2011 vintage set to arrive, one thing is for sure, the quality of the overall vintage in Spain (and for Western Europe for that matter) in 2011 was excellent to say the least with some properties proclaiming they have produced their finest wines in a generation – 2011 is turning out to be the finest vintage ever for the appellation of Jumilla.

Saturday, January 11th, 2014 – 4pm – 7pm

Saturday’s Selections: $25.00 per person

Featuring Wines of California

2010 Solitude Chardonnay ($27.99)

Solitude Chardonnay is barrel fermented in French oak, utilizing Burgundian yeast strains. Malo-lactic fermentation, yeast contact, and stirring occur during the seven months of oak aging. Traditional Burgundian techniques combined with California cellar practices produces the ultra premium Chardonnay that is consistently marked with high quality and value.

2012 Tamber Bey Sauvignon Blanc ($29.99)

New to the Tamber Bey portfolio is our Sauvignon Blanc from the Tench Vineyard in Oakville. Winemaker Frederic Delivert developed a unique aging program for this wine, aging 60% of the wine for six months in both Oak and Acacia wood barrels and the other 40% in stainless steel. Blending both lots together has created a complex and fresh wine that is delightfully balanced.

2008 Star Angel Red ($39.99)

Marked by complex flavors built around rich mineral, graphite, dried berry, sage and cedar notes that are slow to unfold but offer wonderful depth, focus and length as they do. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2022. 3,000 cases made. –JL Wine Spectator 92 Points

2009 Leviathan Red ($49.99)

A tight, young and vibrant red, with a pure, focused core of dried berry, currant and dill, expanding and gliding through the finish, where touches of dried herb and cedar reverberate. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2023. 6,700 cases made. –JL Wine Advocate 91 Points

2010 Snowden Cabernet ($49.99)

Snowden’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon The Ranch is one of the bigger, juicier wines readers will come across in this vintage. Mocha, chocolate, spices, plums and black cherries seem to literally jump from the glass. Merlot plays a pretty important role in the 2010, which gives the wine much of its roundness and early accessibility. Round, expressive and racy, the 2010 Ranch is a terrific effort from Snowden. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Wine Advocate 92 Points!

On request this Friday night we will do a battle of domestic Pinot Noir. We will begin with a fantastic lush and creamy Longwood Chardonnay before diving into four Pinot’s from various regions. They include the Santa Barbara County 2012 Lea, the Russian River 2010 Athair, the Willamette Valley 2009 Domaine Serene, and finally the Sonoma Coast 2011 Flowers. Come and join us to see which Pinot Noir will rein supreme. All featured wines are available 15% off for one day only.

The Wine Spectator magazine recently released its 2013 Top 100 Wines. On Saturday our fortunate wine tasters will get the opportunity to taste five of the wines that made the list. It is an opportunity we rarely get the chance to do. The wines consist of one white (a Washington Riesling from Charles Smith Wines) and four reds. The Reds include: A-Z Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, Greywacke New Zealand Pinot Noir, Epoch Estates Red Blend, and finally Hewitt Napa Valley Cabernet. The Hewitt landed in the top 10 this year!!! The wines are very limited, and I cannot guarantee that we will have many available for purchase, and therefore we will not be offering them at the 15% off discount for this one time tasting event.

Friday’s Selections: $20.00 per person

The Battle of Domestic Pinot Noirs

2011 Longwood Napa Valley Chardonnay ($34.99)

“There’s plenty to admire in this Chardonnay, from the dryness and acidic structure to the subtle, complex range of citrus and tropical fruit flavors. The creamy, leesy mouthfeel makes it lush.” Steve Heimoff – Wine Enthusiast 89 Points!

2012 Lea Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir ($29.99)

The 2012 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills is a winner. Perfumed and loaded with fruit, it offers up beautiful purity, vibrant acidity and a pure silk texture that’s hard to resist. Crushed berries, flowers and spice are just some of the nuances here and this has a decidedly upfront, delicious profile that will be ideally suited for drinking over the coming 4-5 years. Drink now-2018.” Jeb Dunnuck – Wine Advocate 92 Points!

2010 Athair Russian River Pinot Noir ($34.99)

This wine wonderfully expresses the “terroir” of the Russian River Valley, with bright red fruit dominating but accompanied by earthy undertones. It shows flavors of bright raspberry, currant, dark cherry and vanilla. Hints of tobacco leaves and cloves merge with the vibrant fruit flavors creating an intricate and rich balance ending in a long dark finish.

2009 Domaine Serene Willamette Vly Pinot Noir ($44.99)

“It is firm in texture, featuring mildly chewy tannins around the butterscotch-accented blackberry flavors. The wine finishes with refinement. Will drink best from 2013 through 2017. 5,000 cases made.” –HS Wine Spectator 89 Points!“The Serene 2009 Pinot Noir Yamhill Cuvee offers sweeter red berry flavors than does the corresponding 2010, with brown spice accents and nicely integrated tannic chew. Pure-fruited and with ample finishing juiciness, this betrays none of its vintage’s weak sides and ought to drink well for another several years.” JS Wine Advocate 89 Points!

2011 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($49.99)

A model of total elegance and class, the 2011 Pinot Noir from Flowers is absolutely gorgeous. Savory herbs, crushed flowers, licorice, salt, orange peel, mint and plums are all woven together in the glass. Today, the 2011 is impeccably crafted and flat-out gorgeous. Although very much a medium-bodied wine, I would not at all be surprised to see the 2011 blossom with more time in bottle. This is an impressive effort. Unfortunately, the Sonoma Coast was the only 2011 Flowers Pinot I was able to taste, but based on this effort, 2011 is certainly shaping up well here. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021.” Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 91 Points!

Wine Spectators 2013 Top 100 Wines

2012 Charles Smith Kung Fu Riesling ($12.99)

Lovely, expressive, bright and vibrant, with apple, lime and citrus blossom flavors, persisting enticingly as the off-dry finish lingers against natural acidity. Drink now through 2015. 70,600 cases made. –HS Wine Spectator 90 Points!

2011 A to Z Pinot Noir ($19.99)

This sleek red is tightly packed, with delicate layers of cherry, tobacco and cocoa flavors that mingle against refined tannins, persisting pleasantly on the light-stepping finish. Drink now through 2017.—H.S. Wine Spectator 90 Points!

2011 Greywacke Pinot Noir ($39.99)

Drink now through 2024. 500 cases imported.—M.W. Wine Spectator 93 Points!

2010 Epoch Estates Red Blend ($49.99)

Combines richness with subtlety and finesse, weaving together fresh earth, chocolate-covered espresso bean and vivid dark berry flavors with touches of hazelnut, gliding to a long, graceful finish. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Tempranillo. Drink now through 2022. 1,699 cases made.—James Laube Wine Spectator 93 Points!

2010 Hewitt Cabernet ($99.99)

Deliciously pure, rich and deep, featuring tiers of spicy red berry, blackberry and red and black licorice flavors, with pretty wilted rose scents and a long, seamless finish that slowly reveals an underlying tannic grip. Drink now through 2026. 2,592 cases made.—James Laube Wine Spectator 95 Points!

Throughout the history of wine-making and viticulture, the differences in quality between one plot of land and another have been closely observed. For instance, in Burgundy for decades now the highest quality vineyards receive the “Grand Cru ranking.” In the United States, however, single vineyard wines are recent phenomena. Laws vary slightly, but a single vineyard designated wine is a wine produced entirely (or nearly entirely—U.S. law is 95 percent) from that vineyard. Therefore many estates select the very best grapes from their very best vineyards when bottling single vineyard wine. Indeed, specific vineyards have become famous for their production and often grapes from these vineyards are sold to various “rockstar” winemakers who are eagerly seeking the highest quality grapes.

On both Friday and Saturday we will try five different single vineyard wines. Both nights will feature five different wines (two white and three reds). The wines are entirely different on both evenings so feel free to join us for both tastings if you like. On Friday the featured wine is the 2009 Wedell Hillside Vineyard Chardonnay, and on Saturday the 2009 Hawyood Los Chamizal Vineyard Cabernet will be our grand finale.

See you this weekend!

Planted over 25 years ago at the north east end of the Alexander Valley, the vineyard is dry farmed and has a yield of less than two tons per acre, sitting on a bench that was once the Russian River. Nose: Pear, fig, ripe apple and slight melon with some sweet citrus & white blossom. Mouth: very bright entry, with a rich fruit cream finish.

2012 Talbott Sleepy Hallow Vineyard Chardonnay ($24.99)

Located in the stunning Santa Lucia Highlands, 13 miles south of Monterey Bay, this 565-acre hillside vineyard is divided into three separate vineyard parcels, Sleepy Hollow West, Sleepy Hollow South and Sleepy Hollow North. The juicy, lively 2011 Chardonnay Logan is a great value. It offers up great aromas of ripe peach, citrus, kiwi, toast and crushed stone to go with a medium-bodied, balanced mouthfeel that gains in richness and depth with air. Enjoy this rock-solid white over the coming 3-4 years. Drink now-2017.” Jeb Dunnuck – Wine Advocate – 90 Points

2007 Miura Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir ($49.99)

Nestled between the dry creek beds and hills in the southern Santa Lucia Highlands are the vines at the Pisoni Vineyard and are intensely monitored by Gary Pisoni and his family. Like most of the wines from that vineyard, it has beautifully pure black raspberry and floral-infused black currant fruit with some sweet cherries, underbrush, and forest floor. With distinctive richness, full-bodied power, and an underlying earthiness (no doubt contributed by both the vineyard and the use of stems), this deep ruby/purple-colored wine actually needs about a year or two of bottle age, but it should drink well for up to a decade.” – Robert Parker

2005 Casa Lapostolle Las Kuras Vineyard Syrah ($32.99)

Las Kuras vineyard is located in the Cachapoal Valley, 100 km south of Chile’s capital, Santiago near the Andes Mountains range. This vineyard has 115 hectares of vines, planted from 1992 to 2000, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah. It is dark, but pure and focused, with espresso-tinged tannins carrying the dark plum, briar, fig cake and bittersweet cocoa notes. Long, muscular finish is fine-grained and should cellar nicely- 2,070 cases made. –JM Wine Spectator – 91 Points

2009 Haywood Los Chamizal Vineyard Cabernet ($54.99)

Los Chamizal Vineyards, located in the foothills above the city of Sonoma, was first planted in the 1970′s. Los Chamizal is sustainably farmed, using permanent crop cover, compost and organic fertilizers to nurture the soil. The Haywood 2009 has a ripe, opulent style, with rich, juicy plum, blackberry and wild berry flavors, showing touches of licorice, spice, cedar and light dusty earth. Tightly focused, offering mild tannins that give the flavors the right amount of traction. Drink now through 2024. 120 cases made. –James Laube Wine Spectator – 93 Points

Hope to see you all out this weekend!

(From CookingWithMelody.com) You never thought that a vegetarian dish could be this rich and flavorful! The savory red wine vegetarian stew made with hearty mushrooms, carrots and parsnips is topped off with a blend of white potatoes, more parsnips, and gruyere cheese. It makes a great main course dish for veggie lovers and better yet a complimentary side dish to beef, lamb, or chicken.

Ingredients

Vegetarian Stew
10 ounces, mix of white and red pearl onions
5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil + additional
2 medium leeks (white and pale green parts only), halved lengthwise, thinly sliced, thoroughly washed (about 2 ½ cups)
2 large shallots, halved, thinly sliced (about ½ cup)
4 garlic cloves, finely chopped (about 2 tablespoons)
4 medium carrots, peeled and sliced diagonally into ¼ inch thick pieces (about 2 cups)
4 medium parsnips, peeled and sliced diagonally into ¼ inch thick pieces (about 2 cups)
1 pound baby Bella Mushrooms, sliced into ½ inch thick slices
2 tablespoons thyme leaves
1 tablespoon finely chopped rosemary
1 (750ml) bottle Cabernet Wine
3 cups vegetable broth
6 oz. tomato paste
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 bay leave
½ cup finely chopped Italian parsley
1 tablespoon sugar
1 ½ teaspoons salt + additional
1 ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Gruyere Cheese Potato Topping
3 ½ pounds white rose potatoes, peeled and quartered
2 parsnips, peeled and cut into 1 inch thick pieces (about 10-12 ounces)
½ cup whole milk
½ cup heavy whipping cream
½ stick unsalted butter
9 oz. shredded Gruyere cheese
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper

Preparation

Prepare Stew:
Fill medium pot with water and bring to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and blanch pearl onions for 2 minutes, then drain and cool in an ice bath to stop cooking. Gently trim and peel onions, leaving roots intact. Set aside.

Heat olive oil in a heavy large pot over medium-high heat. Add leeks and shallots, add a pinch of salt and cook stirring occasionally, until softened, about 6-7 minutes. Add garlic and sauté 1 minute longer. Add mushrooms, a pinch of salt, and sauté until browned and slightly softened, about 5 minutes, adding additional olive oil if needed. Add parsnips, carrots, thyme and rosemary and sauté, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are just tender, about 7-10 minutes. Transfer vegetable mixture to a bowl.

Add wine to the pot and bring to a boil until reduced to 1 cup, about 20 minutes.

While wine reduces, make a beurre manie by stirring together butter and flour in a small bowl to form a paste.
Add vegetable broth to pot and bring to a simmer. Whisk in beurre manie until slightly thickened. Stir in tomato paste. Add sugar, salt, black pepper and bay leave. Stir until combined. Add vegetable mixture and pearl onions. Cover and cook on a low simmer until flavors combined and mixture thickens, about 25- 30 minutes.
Remove from heat, discard bay leave and stir in chopped parsley.

Make Potato topping while Stew simmers:
Cover potatoes and parsnips in a large pot of water, add a pinch of salt and bring to a boil. Cook until very tender, about 30 minutes. Drain in a colander and return potatoes and parsnips back to the pot.
Bring butter, milk and cream to a simmer in a small saucepan over medium-heat. Stir in salt and pepper. Remove from heat. Gradually add mixture to the drained potato mixture and mash until almost smooth (you may not need entire milk mixture, do not over whip potatoes) Stir in 2 cups of the shredded gruyere cheese, reserving additional cheese.

Assemble Pie and Bake:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees with rack in the center.

Pour stew into a 2 inch deep, 13 x 9 flame proof baking dish. Spoon potato mixture in large dollops over entire top of stew mixture. Carefully spread evenly to cover entire top. Using the back of a fork, draw lines across the top of the potato mixture. Sprinkle reserved remaining cheese over entire top. Place in the oven and bake until stew mixture begins to bubble, about 20 minutes. Switch oven to broil and broil until top is golden brown, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow pie to rest, about 10 minutes.

*Stew can be prepared one day ahead and re-heated before assembling.
